CIYDC Leadership & Resiliency Programme is a continuum of asset-building activities provided to young people in three phases. Starting at grade 6 participants are prepared for transition into the secondary school system. Here they are expected to be committed to consistently develop their assets. At the second phase young people in grades 7 and 8 are encouraged to continue their asset-building/ personal development, whilst being empowered to help their peers succeed as well. The final phase targets grade 9 through 12 where young people are expected to be committed to inspiring and leading others in asset-building activities and projects, as their duty of giving back to the community.
PHASE 1: AGE/ GRADE: 6th, 9-10 - YOUTH TRANSITIONS - is an out-of-school programme intended to build the Developmental Assets® in our young people through individual asset-building planning and creative programming. Each main component of the programme uses main categories of the Search Institute's Developmental Assets® to develop the skills, mastery and healthy identity for transition.
PHASE 2: YOUTH EMPOWERMENT: AGE/ GRADE: 7th - 8th, 11-12 PHASE 3: YOUTH LEADERSHIP: AGE/GRADE: 9th-12th, 13-17- YOUTH EMPOWERMENT & LEADERSHIP - is intended to be held in each district focusing on recognizing and developing youth as resources within their community. They are provided with the encouragement, skills, and knowledge to get involved in being proactive within their communities. It is the incorporation of key elements of authentic youth involvement such as empowering, listening, valuing, soliciting and respecting youth’s opinions, ideas, feedback, and contributions that we ensure youth involved directly and indirectly feel that they are valued and heard. They are shaping the agenda of action and thus feel that they are making a contribution to other youth and to their community. This project extends the accumulation of Developmental Assets® to cultivate an asset-building community. Each of the assets serves to reduce alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, and reduce violent behavior by increasing thriving for today’s children - tomorrow’s adults.
